I am struck by several things on this trip. Number one is the complexity of the country. I am also struck by the fact that I think, as Bridget pointed out earlier, there is probably not a consensus on how to proceed: There may be multiple imaginings of Turkey and Turkey’s future.
I am convinced that the United States and Turkey need each other badly, and the alliance has got to continue, and be strengthened and deepened. I am also struck with the hospitality and warmth of the people. That is extraordinary! I have never been treated quiet like this before by so many people. It is a memorable experience. I am also struck by some of the, I will call it, the regional diversity in Turkey which I think probably complicates even more what I think is the complexity of the country…. and I will be back!
