Turkish-American Night in Maryland

dialogue-awards-south-africaState senators and delegates of Maryland joined together with Turkish-Americans and enjoyed everything from Turkiye’s food to its ancient crafts.

The Intercultural Reception was held at the Loews Hotel on February 23rd, organized by the Maryland Turkish American Inhabitants (MARTI).

Attendees had the opportunity to listen to Turkish Sufi Music, taste Turkish food and admire Turkish art shows.

The Reception started at 6.30 pm with a Sufi Music performance of Ahmet Erdogdular and his group. In addition, Salih Gokmen, Turkish Caligrapher and Tuba Tuncer, Turkish Water Marbling (Ebru) Artist performaned until the end of the evening.

Senators Delores Kelly and James Robey reflected on their recent Turkey trips, and shared their memories with the audience. The reception was also honored by Governor O’Malley, who was welcomed by the presidents of Mid Atlantic Federations of Turkic American Associations (MAFTAA), Dr. Faruk Taban and MARTI, Fatih Kuzu. Governor O` Malley emphasized (state of) Maryland’s enthusiasm to attract international enterprises. Governor O` Malley expressed his appreciation for the contributions of the Turkish-Americans to the state of Maryland.

A Turkish carpet and Ebru were presented to Governor O’Malley in addition to Cini (Porcelain plate decorated by Turkish art) by Dr. Taban after Governor O’Malley’s talk. He visited the various art demonstrations, talking with the Caligrapher and Water Marbler. He also tasted Turkish Co­­ffee and baklava.

Senators, Delegates and members of the MARTI enjoyed the reception and left the program with their name written in Turkish Caligraphy. Numerous VIP leaders from the Turkish community were also present including from the Rumi Forum, TACTIC and ATFA.
