“The lawsuit against Fethullah Gulen is pure political theater and is completely without merit,” said Reid Weingarten of Steptoe & Johnson LLP, Fethullah Gulen’s attorney. “This lawsuit appears to be the latest in a series of politically motivated attacks leveled by the Turkish government against Fethullah Gulen, who has publicly accused the Tayyip Erdogan administration of being corrupt and authoritarian,” Weingarten added in a statement on Tuesday.Fethullah Gulen is accused of restricting the freedoms of three individuals, members of a radical group believed to have links with al-Qaeda. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan publicly backed the group, whose leader had said on live TV that he loves Osama bin Laden, al-Qaeda’s slain leader.
