Jim Harrington, a US human rights attorney and University of Texas professor, openly stated that Erdogan’s talk about extradition of Turkish scholar Fethullah Gulen is “foolish, absurd and self-serving.” Harrington wrote a book titled “Wrestling with Free Speech, Religious Freedom and Democracy in Turkey: The Political Trials and Times Fethullah Gülen.” Turkish media claimed that Erdogan was going to ask Obama to extradite Fethullah Gulen from the United States during the NATO Summit in Brussels last week. Harrington believes that USA would refuse to extradite Gulen because when such an attempt was done in 2008, federal court blocked the request and reaffirmed Gulen’s right to stay in the USA. At the moment, the relationships between Turkey and the USA are worse than six years ago, so Obama administration would hardly respond positively to Erdogan’s request.
