Peace Islands Institute, a Hizmet organization in New York, organized a talk on Gulen and the Hizmet Movment at the Turkish Cultural Center NY. The speaker was the political scientist and analyst Dr. Dogu Ergil. Ergil is known for his sociological works on the civil society in Turkey. Ergil has written a book on the “Gulen Movement titled Fethullah Gulen & The Gulen Movement in 100 Questions.
” Prof. Ergil spoke to the views of Fethullah Gulen, his ideas on society and the state, and the basic principles of the Hizmet Movemement. Peace Islands Institute’s president Zafer Akin referred to Gulen as a Turkish Scholar, writer, thinker, and opinion leader in his opening remarks. Akin, also stated that the world needs the Hizmet Movement for a sustainable peace environment. Professor Ergil said that the Hizmet Movement is teaching people to defend world peace by respecting each other’s faith and ethnicity. This was an Ottoman heritage because the empire was able to govern over a diverse people who came from very different backgrounds both culturally and religiously. Turkey is still home to wide variety of faith traditions.
